Body changes – acceptance and respect

The teen years are not easy for most people. During adolescence puberty make us go through many changes: physical, emotional, psychological and mental. These changes can be overwhelming and hard to deal with, both for the teenager going through them, and the people around him/her that will provide some help and guidance. Talking about the changes that come with puberty can also be difficult and awkward, but some conversations should not be avoided. It is important that youngsters feel they have a security net, people whom they can trust and go to when they are feeling overwhelmed and confused. Even though all changes that come with puberty are important and equally hard to deal with, the physical ones can be more difficult to accept as they are visible to everyone. Therefore, it is important that youngsters learn to deal with these changes learning to accept them and grow to respect their bodies. Teachers can play an important role in their learners’ security net and play an active part in providing some guidance during these processes of change.
